An Invitation to the cultural sector and youth arts community from Bright Space

 Friday 8th July 2011 / 3pm – 4.30pm / at mac, Cannon Hill Park

In July 2010 Bright Space recruited 17 young people aged between 15-19yrs from Birmingham and the West Midlands to be the authors and editors of the Platform blog (www.projectplatform.org.uk).

Over the last 12 months the group have received training, support and guidance from industry experts from multimedia journalism and the creative industries. Organisations have included; Capsule, Fierce Festival, mac, Birmingham Hippodrome, Created in Birmingham, 4Talent, Fused Magazine and the Birmingham Mail. The Platform journalists have shaped the voice, content and direction of the Platform blog by attending, discussing, reviewing and examining the creative opportunities available to them and other young people in their city.

An Invitation

As decision makers, budget holders and project managers we have a responsibility to engineer creative projects that elicit a sense of energy, kinship, commitment, challenge and adventure, projects that enable young people to become dynamic creative leaders and amplify their voices as the change makers of our future.

If you consider:

·          Traditional industry is in decline and we are entering the age of the interface

·          Youth unemployment is the highest it has ever been, whilst youth services have been shrunk beyond recognition

·          Birmingham is now the youngest city in Europe

How can we build on our successes and improve the relationship between youth and culture in Birmingham under these challenging circumstances?

Bright Space invites you to come and join in the discussion, hear presentations and commentary from the young people from Project Platform.

It is also an opportunity for cultural organisations to present ideas and information on current and future youth arts projects to the Project Platform group and to a wider audience. About Bright Space

Bright Space celebrates and realises the aspirations of young people by shining a spotlight on their creativity.

Bright Space is a registered charity whose aim is to champion young people’s creativity and to support and widen opportunities for their involvement in cultural activity.  We do this by partnering young people with the very best creative professionals so that they can develop a variety of skills and experiences.

We work strategically with local authorities and national agencies to see how we can best engage with young people to consider the broader social and family contexts within which young people grow up.  We use the findings from our programmes to promote public debate and to influence policy so as to affect change.
